I think I've done it! (well, DUH)
Unumber: U521150, I think
Ok, here goes...
-5 - 3 + ArcTan(1) - 1 + 5 - 0 = 42
Has anyone got a more elegant way of doing it?

to you, mr brains!
is that meant to be a = though? Call me an idiot, wouldn't it be - or + 0 then =42?
Oh, this makes me so glad I gave up Maths!

So:
(5*2)*1*(1+5)=42
And the 0 can just go as ...+5) - 0 = 42
Right?
*phew*

AK - fancy that! Posted Dec 1, 2003
oh... I see now... yeah just put a plus or minus 0 at the end.
No, what I really meant was
-5-3+ArcTan(1)-1+5+ 0!=42
instead of -5-3+ArcTan(1)-1+5 - 0 =42
arctan(1) does equal 45 does it not?
or -5-3+Arctan(1)*1+5+0=42

For no-bracket solutions:
5*-2+1+1+50
5-2-11+50
52-11+5^0

5 x 8 = 40
-3 = 37
+9 = 46
-4 = 42
42/1 = 42
There, that looks about right!
Thirty seconds, including proof-reading!

Apologies. Too much watching "Countdown" and too little time reading the rules that apply here.
This has been referred to me5x3)-8-1+(9x4)=42.
