To add to the above manual solution, my solution-finding program comes up with (among many others):-
2*2*2*2+26 = 42 (effectively 16+22)
2*2+22*2-6 = 42 (4+44-6)
2+2*(2*(2+2+6)) = 42 (2+(2*2*10))
2-2*(2*(2-2*6)) = 42 (2-(2*2*-10)) (somewhat similar to above)
(22-2-2)*2+6 = 42 (18*2+6)
22+2*(2+2+6) = 42 (22+2*10)
