A Conversation for The Myth Of 42 [(5-3+0+5) * (6+0) = 42]

what about -42? 2*(1-(9+8+5+0)) = -42

still working on +42

Well, let's see:

If you just use a '-' before your proposal, everything turns out to be fine:

-2*(1-9-8-5-0)=+42

or, a bit more daring:

21*(9-8+5^0)=42

-42 * -1 = 42

"Other standard functions on a Calculator are also allowed - including ArcTan, Sin, Cos, etc...."
With that in mind: abs(-42) = 42
This is good for programming because it wont return negative numbers like the first one does.
ex: (2*21) * -1 = -42 smiley - sadface
abs((2*21) * -1 ) = 42 smiley - smiley

Do you allow the ^2 (Ie square) function?

If so, I'm 20+((1+1)^2)+18.

That should rather be

(20+1)*(1+1^8) =
21 * (1+1) =
21 * 2 = 42 smiley - smiley

If you use the ^2 function, you introduce another digit (the 2) into your solution, and that's not allowed smiley - sadface

Oh, and consider yourself a friend of the 42.... R. Daneel (is that just Marvin in disguise - or vice versa???) (Now there's one for the Conspiracy Theorists - DNA and IA in collusion...) (and they're both dead....... Supposedly...)
