(I think. Can someone please check this for me? Maths isn't my strong point...

( 1 + 8 ) * ( - 1 + 7 ) + 1 - 1 = 4 2 !!

You've come up with 54 
I think you mean ( -1 + 8 ) * ( -1 + 7) + 1 - 1 =42
You can also do 1*(8-1)*(7-1)*1=42 which is a bit tidier.
