Entry: Where Stereotypes Come From and Stereotype Formation - A52771692
Author: Slartibartfast347 - U10681217

Ready for Peer Review...maybe make it into the Edited Guide! :D

Reminder: this entry specifically only covers where stereotypes come from and how they are formed (via theory - not anatomically/physiologically what happens in the brain type stuff).

Open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!

>>The foundations of stereotypes are the “texts” of society, which are any and all aspects of a culture...<<

I am a slow learner here Slarti, and it would help me out a bit if you could spend a bit more time explaining how this use of 'text' came about and in what context (psychology?) it is used in this way. A footnote perhaps to enlighten me? smiley - smiley

>>Despite the different names each language and culture has for it, we all know what a “football” is.<<

It's a nitpick I know but your choice of a football as being universally understood is not without confusion, as football is different in Europe and the US. Over there they would have to say a 'soccer' ball I think smiley - erm Maybe you could use something even more neutral, a bicycle for instance?

Anyway I hate to criticise such a worthy entry smiley - goodluck

This looks promising smiley - ok

When you use capital letters later on in the entry, you ought to put them in bold (</B&gtsmiley - winkeye - otherwise, phrases such as 'Although I was a symptom' can be confusing.

Gnomon - time to move on

Hi Slarti.

This looks promising but you lost me with the following statement:

"Because society is merely an agreed upon collection of “texts”"

That's not what I thought society meant.

Since you've converted this to GuideML, you should get the GuideML right. Get rid of all those tags - they're not approved. Instead, but a at the start of each paragraph and a at the end of each paragraph.

Hello Slarti smiley - smiley

Be careful you have used American spelling instead of English. Thus humor is humour.

Use single quotation marks instead of double

Just one more thing smiley - biro

Perhaps you could give examples such as we all know people of African background are said to be sporty and Colin Jackson is just one sporting personality that emphasises that stereotype. However, when he took a look back over his family history and genetics etc he found that a mixture of things came together to make him sporty.

I would remark that there may be benign, malign, and inert sources for stereotypes: <> is the ultimate source, and then there is a lot of reaction over time. Stereotypes can be fact-based, but they are often due to the effect of a chain of hearsay, and outright fraud/propaganda is to be warned against.

Slarti hasn't posted since july 31st.

Shall we tidy this out of PR? My vote is to send it back to entry in case he still wants to work on it.

But if he never comes back, we'll lose a perfectly good FM piece... He can always pick it up from there himself!

Yes, he doesn't seem terribly interested in finishing anything, which is a pity, since they show promise. I've put it on the list for FM.
