This probably isn't quite the right place, but maybe someone will be able to tell me where is. I'm trying to do an entry on ASCII Art, using the tags to format the art. It looks fine when I preview the page, but when I add the entry, h2g2 does a wonderful mangling job on it smiley - sadface Take a look:

Any ideas how to get round it?

Wow! That eagle/kestrel totally blew me away. How the hell do you do that? Amazing.

In answer to your query... I have no answer. But I'll try and find one and get back to you.

Great work. smiley - smiley

The eagle - you can see it properly?

I didnt do it, its by someone who signs their work 'Row'. I'm collecting together a few classic works that people have done for the entry, and the eagle is definitely one of them. I will certainly have to include one of my pics though smiley - smiley

Beautiful!
I can see the h2g2 signature and the eagle. The first image seems to be some guy doing a < winkeye >. They're all correctly shown in non-proportional font (using IE5.5). Only thing is that some carriage returns are missing, so that two or three lines per image extend out to the right instead of continuing the picture downwards. Is that what you mean by 'mangling' ?

I think I've identified the problem. Its when theres a line ending with a '\' it removes it and the return immediately after it. Can fix by adding a space after the '\' and before the return. Should be looking much better now (I hope).

Yes, they're under the copyright of the artist. They generally won't mind you using them as long as you don't remove the initials though.

Still having trouble though. h2g2 really isn't user-friendly for doing ascii-art. I'd love to know if there's an alternative to the PRE tag that it deals with properly. Right now it seems to read through art inside of PRE tags checking for tags and other bits. I just got this error message:

Y88888888bo. .Missing equals sign between attribute and attribute value. od88888888 hs /^-._ \=_

The bit other than the error message is part of the picture, which h2g2 is trying to read as an attribute value, whatever one of those is...and I really don't want to alter the art so that h2g2 ignores things.

Oops, no that was my mistake - forgot to change the < and > in the art to < and >

So far I think I know all the tricks now...

A couple more pictures added.
