Routes to Work

I'm sure Sustrans is doing a good job, but they seem to subscribe to the idea that potholed shingle and mud are ideal cycling surfaces. This policy effectively excludes all but MTB riders.

I cycled to work along part of the National Cycle Network this morning and when I arrived me and the bike were covered in mud from head to foot (headset to tyres, in the case of the bike). I have other bikes which have mudguards, but the surface was so bad it would wreck them in a few days.

Why can't cycle tracks have a metalled surface? They would still cost a lot less to build than roads do.
