The UK currently has some of the busiest roads in Europe, and it is believed that the congestion will get much worse. We don't have much space and the road layouts in many towns and cities were put down before cars were even thought of.
Surprisingly, compared to the rest of Europe, we hardly ever cycle, and too many people take their car for journeys they could easily walk, despite the traffic jams and cost of fuel (which is currently very high). Public transport systems are less than satisfactory in many areas and are still seen by many as an unacceptable alternative.
Backed by funds from the National Lottery, local authorities, development agencies, the Highways Agency, the European Union and it's supporters, Sustrans plan to build 10 000 miles of safe and attractive traffic free routes and paths all across the country.
5000 miles of the network are already open, with routes suitable for journeys to school or work, leisure or tourism.
