Hi Opti. Another great subject for a Guide Entry, but, as with Winnie the Pooh, Jansson's stories are much loved, so you need to do them justice. Have you read the Moomin books?
I discovered them when my daughter watched the cartoons on TV. We then got her the books. I think they're some of the finest children's stories ever written.
I think the Guide could support a separate entry on the Moomin books if you don't want to describe them in more detail here, but I'd be inclined to describe the series a little more. Mention that they live in this idyllic community in Moominvalley, where it is always Summer (but they do hibernate when it gets dark), etc.
They're not all hippo-shaped trolls, are they? Snork looks more like an aardvark, I think, and some of them, like Snufkin, are more like elves.
You should probably mention a couple of her books for adults: "Summer Book" was a bestseller, I think.
...famous for her lesbian relationship with graphic artist Tuulikki Pietilä?

The Moomins are hippo-shaped trolls, as are the Snork and his sister the Snork Maiden. But they have a lot of friends who live with them. Sniff, a small forest creature; Snufkin, a sort of walking scarecrow; Little My, a minuscule but very loud person; an existentialist minimalist Muskrat; the Hemulen, who likes collecting things and so on.

Yes, you're right Gnomon - it's Sniff, not Snork, who's the aardvark-shaped one.

""wrote her last book Moominvalley in November, in 1970.""
That was her last Moomin book. After that she wrote quite some other books, including The Summer Book (1972) you mention later.

Hati's point in posting 27 still applies. You say that Tove Jansson wrote her last book in 1970, but she didn't, as she wrote other books after this date.

Mol - on the new tablet Posted Jun 1, 2009
Hi Opticalillusion
It's been *ages* since I've looked at PR and thought "Ooh! I'd like to read that", so thank you
I enjoyed reading this and learnt some things about Tove Jansson I didn't know. There is, if I remember rightly, a short biography in the Puffin editions of her Moomin books, and I'll check that on my way upstairs later (it's two flights of stairs away, sorry!). But I share the view that there needs to be more in it about what she wrote and when, because the entry isn't clear on that. Could you include a simple bibliography perhaps?
Mol

How is this doing Opti? I am a big nostalgia fan of the Moomins, and looking forward to this making it into the Guide!

How's this coming along? Is it nearly there? I've replaced the broken 'moomin park 'link with this one: http://www.muumimaailma.fi/
Is that ok?
Cheers
