Talking Point: Netiquette

Netiquette

Have you been using the Internet for a while now? Then no doubt you know all about internet etiquette, or netiquette as it's known.

The Community team at h2g2 wants to compile the definitive guide to community netiquette, but can you help us? Your conversations in this Talking Point are going to be used as the basis for the offical guide to netiquette on h2g2, so let's try and make it as comprehensive as possible.

  • What are the core rules of netiquette1?

  • If a newcomer to h2g2 wants to make friends and become a part of the community, then what should they do?

  • Is there anything a newcomer should avoid doing on h2g2?

  • How safe is it to make friends over the Internet? Are there things that people can do to safeguard themselves or their privacy?

  • How does social behaviour on the Internet compare to real life? Do people have to behave differently online?

  • How would you advise people to handle real-life meet-ups with Internet friends?

1Most netiquette guides cover newsgroup or email netiquette, and many of these standard 'rules' are not relevant to a web-based community. We're after community netiquette, not newsgroup or email netiquette!
