A Conversation for Talking Point: Should Abortion be Available on Request?
endangering the life of the mother

Aside from rape or incest, exception is often made by otherwise 'pro-life' campaigners for cases where carrying the foetus to term would likely kill the mother, owing to complications. Similarly where the foetus would be highly unlikely to survive (or in severe cases, where both might die). Unfortunately, all pregnancy carries risk, so it's hard to know where to draw the line. -- plugs previous conversation on abortion: http://www.h2g2.com/F52172?thread=72432 entry on general ethics: A468920
