I had a supervisor that had been a co-worker and friend at one time. When she was promoted to supervisor her attitude changed, and although she surrounded herself with talented workers that helped her look good, she was constantly worried they'd overshadow her, so she kept us all under an iron fist (we'd be "punished" if she got annoyed at us by being given the worst jobs to complete).
It turns out that she was stealing from the company, and they had been watching her for a while. When they had enough evidence against her, they escorted her off the premises. She then tried to sue them for discrimination! Our entire department breathed a collective sigh of relief to see her go.
The worst part however, is that she thought her "friends" at work should have stood up for her! She kept calling us at home and yelling that we weren't really her friends, and we should quit our jobs in protest! Then her husband got involved and started making threatening calls to us. Needless to say, the police became involved. What a mess!
The only good thing to come of it was that as a consequence of the threats, we all got escorts to our cars after work, and we were able to park in "princess" spots right near the entrance!
Last we heard she was running messages for an advertising agency...

And at the other end of the spectrum... I had a supervisor at one point in my life who was just a few years older than I. We both had similar interests and attitudes, and so we started hanging out together. Eventually, we ended up sharing an apartment. You would have thought that we would have gotten sick of each other, seeing each other almost constantly... working together, going home together, and going out together with all the same friends. Clearly, a unique situation that will never happen again.
And as for now? Well, my division chief is the one who hired me, and we were friends before I came to work there... that's how she knew that I was available and looking and more than qualified. Because she's so high up in the food chain, I've worked extra hard to show that any promotions or special treatment I might be perceived to receive are based entirely on performance. We still get together and joke around, because working together has made us even better friends, but I feel like I've demonstrated my skills enough to negate any bad feelings in the office, except from people who don't work with me directly. I'm sure there are people talking behind my back, but to hell with them.
Side note... I'm up for a promotion.
