As the guide is now well know and mobile+PDA technology has been adapted, Why not make a PDA-type gizmo that links up to h2g2. It could be in the design of the fictional guide as well with DONT PANIC on the front. A mini keyboard that slid out would be better than a touch screen as it would cost less. Users could even log into the site! I know this is a bit outlandish but think about it as there will be parameters for it in the future.
NOTE: If there is no reply soon, i'll sell the idea to ITV *cackles*
NOTE ON THE NOTE: Just Joking

Have you used our mobile service? There's a link to it on the front page. The BBC isn't really in the market for making handhelds, but lots of other companies do and the latest devices are all compatible with http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/pda/

"Feel free to use your laptop and a cellular modem to connect to the Guide
I do not think there will be anyone with problems if you produce such gizmo yourself, besides yourself. I am afraid the market for the device will be next to zero
Even a HooToo addict like me needs some time not staring at a little window."

I have used mobile service and what I was thinking is the market if you designed it like the guide would be actually quite good as fans of the film/TV/Radio/Books would like to be able to have thier very own guide, this would be a very novel way of selling a handy gadget. If you could only access the guide, this would amke it cheaper than PDA's, giving you the ability to put some better features than the usual mobile and PDA services (e.g sign-in, un-edited guide entries).
I understand the BBC is not in the handheld buisness but you could easily get in touch with a company that is.

It simply wouldn't be viable from a business perspecctive. I wouldn't buy it because I can already do everything I want to on h2g2 from my desktop PC... and I think there are only a couple of hundred (if that!) active users on h2g2 so the thing would never recover the costs of developing and manufacturing.
You *could* argue that it'd sell to the general HHGG fan market, but they'd all be expecting THE Guide, not h2g2.

err, well h2g2 is effectively the guide, and people would love submitting to it properly. My dad is a mad fan of lord of the rings, and say there was a pool of gladriel that was on the internet, with people predicting the future, he would prefer the REAL future, not just about LOTR. I belive it will be the same with h2g2.

Traveller in Time feeling the vibe of the community
"You are right in that one, but chances are 'they' will use all different kinds of equipment to access the Guide. There is already the possibility to access the guide witk mobile equipment, if you have the money.
Just use a laptop, cellular modem or network access points, and you can go wherever you want. No need for a dedicated system with Guide Access only.
There are stickers with for on the covers. "

You can submit to it properly... it's called PeerReview...

Those sites exist already... and they're also a load of dingos kidneys.

If it ain't broke don't fix it... as I said before, a dedicated hand-held guide would be an expensive failure. h2g2 is not here to cater to the unrealisic whims of Hitchhiker's fans.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
