Although this is accurate, it is a bit clinical. The wording in the Review (above) tugged at the heart strings a bit and made me want to . I think something was added by saying that 'the children used to creep out before their Mum awoke'. (i.e. It doesn't matter how awful one is at parenting skills, kids still their Mum). I wonder if you could work on this bit a little more to inject a little more pathos, GB

BigAl I have deliberately rewritten your quotes from the Daily Mail book review for two reasons, 1) I don't want to be accused of plagiarism long after this article is edited, and 2) you have shouted at me before for adding your info "without" paraphrasing.

I have added the info on the controlled experiment with LSD and already added the pending A-number to Cary Grant, which I'll keep an eye on making sure it's edited before this hits the FP.

Yes, I understand that, GB and I wasn't (necessarily) expecting you to use the direct quotes from the DM. It's just that, in the case of the two children, the knowledge that they crept back out before their mum awoke seems to 'speak volumes' . Fore me, at least, that made the whole situation even more . (That's why I said in the above something like, 'Could you write this section in a way that conveys that pathos')

... actually, that's why I enquired (above) whether you had rec'd 'Wishful Drinking' as . Because, if it is mentioned in there you could say s'thing like, 'According to her autobiography, Wishful Drinking' Carrie and her brother used to blah, blah, blah, but then creep out again before their mother woke up in the morning'.

I don't know if I'm the only one who thinks this (if so, I'll shut up) and maybe it's because I didn't know when I read this the first time that they had actually slept together, but I still think it could be clearer.

"She has since stated that she got the part because she slept with writer/director George Lucas. While this was true (the pair were together for a while), it was probably to silence the snide remarks that her getting the part was thanks to her family connections."

While I am aware that your sympathies lie with the children, BigAl, you must be aware that I am a single parent and as such I am very reticent to slag off another single parent's parenting skills. There are two sides to every story, and somewhere inbetween lies the truth. I've not read Debbie's version of events. But Debbie was dealing with being left for the most beautiful woman in the world, of whom I have read nothing that she willfully snapped up her dead husband's best friend and tore that family apart, but Fisher's career was destroyed. Debbie was left to cope with a toddler and baby; no doubt she had help, but I will not call her a bad mother when she did not abandon her children. I've tweaked the sleeping arrangements again and no, I've not read "Wishful Drinking".

I didn't realise she did so much with Tom Hanks, wonder if there's something more to investigate there, as far as relationships away from Hollywood are concerned? Although that's getting a bit car-crash/heat magazine, there might be some interesting things to add to her bio.

I think that probably covers what BigAl was talking about.

Well, I'm not aware that I am 'slagging off a single mothers parenting skills' - quite the reverse. As you say, I was focussing on the childrens' viewpoint of wanting to be close to their Mum. (So that is not slagging off their Mum). But there was something about the relationship which caused them to need to creep out of her room before she awoke. This, I find, very sad.


This is what you write:

To me that DOES emphasise bad parenting skills.

IMO that whole section needs to be written with the great sensitivity with which you must be capable, given your own personal background, GB


Anyway, please don't think I'm trying to railroad you into something you don't feel comfortable writing, or don't even feel to be necessary. I'm only putting forward my own POV which others and indeed, yourself, may not agree with. At the end of the day, it IS your Entry, and you must put into it whay YOU feel.

Somebody, early on in my hootoo membership, once commented that I'm 'like a with a bone' . So I'll stop playing with this particular bone now.

BigAl I appreciate your reviewing, even though we mostly seem to clash heads I think how bad a writer I was 8 years ago, when I first joined h2g2, and realise how much I've learned here thanks to people like Jimster, who taught me to report the facts and let the readers feel their own emotion, Gnomon who taught me *less is more*, Skankyrich who taught me to write from the heart, and Mina, who taught me to write without opinion. Others too, of course. Couldn't mention all or I'll be here all day and I'm trying to write my next entry

To be honest, I disagree that we actually clash heads. We both have POVs which we try to put across
