How old is the book you got from the charity shop? It could be 25 years out of date, which would explain why some of the names and numbers don't match up.

It's quite recent, 2001 copy. I suppose it's possible that Curry Hill is not a road at all, I just assumed Curry Hill is the name of a road.

Wow, in our charity shops it's impossible to find a book published before 1990!
I know nothing at all about Essex, so carry on...

my map book says that Hoe lane should cross the A103 just north of Rettendon, and then goes over Curry Hill before it reaches Rettendon Turnpike

I sort the books in the charity shop, (and get first pick ) any tatty old ones go in the bin, I only put out the best.
D'oh, this is why I'm not trusted with maps and directions when we're travelling. Now just who's dumb idea was it to have two Hoe Lanes, both with CM3 code I now have the correct Hoe Lane, and the correct page still puzzled over Curry Hill though, I suppose that will be in the book, I'll try using magnifier

Hello,
I'm new here, I came across your questions through a search.
To answer your question about the memorials, see the text below from some of my photos of the site.

Alexander Bruce Kynoch of 37 Squadron, joined the RFC in 1916.
He left Stow Maries on the night of 7th March 1918 in a BE12 C3208 in search of a reported lone raider heading for London.
Captain Henry Stroud of 61 Squadron based at Rochford took off about the same time in SE5a B679
Many sorties had been grounded that night because of the weather.
The aircraft collided in the darkness and fell into a field on Dollymans Farm
The two memorials were originally placed on site with two nine foot crosses by the then landowner, Mr. W.W. Wilson, a gentleman farmer. An Officer from 37 (HD) Squadron flew down soon afterwards and landed at the farm, bringing with him a small memorial to be placed at the foot of Kynoch's memorial. We think that over the passage of time, this memorial was later placed at the base of Strouds memorial. The parents of both airmen visited the respective crash sites, and wrote very moving letters to Mr. Wilson thanking him for his kindness and consideration towards the earthly remains of their respective sons.
Later Mr. Wilson had a clause written into the title deeds of the farm, that if sold the two pieces of land where the memorials stand, should forever more remain his property. Later as time progressed two more fashionable memorials appeared which were paid for by the parents.
Captain Stroud is buried in the churchyard of St Andrews Church in Rochford and Captain Kynochs grave, is in the Victorian part of North Finchley cemetery.
I believe they were using the nearby railway line to navigate towards London and unfortunately they both got there at the same time.

Curry Hill is in fact just that a hill in Rettendon.
I've no idea why it was named. See Ordnance Survey maps
