... a mixture of Brum (Birmingham) and Branston (a pickle) ... hmm. Not much to go on really, but sounds like a damn good name for a well-loved teddy bear.
I can just picture some rakish fop, lounging on his leatherr chesterfield, with a thread-bare Steif at his side "...ah yes, old Burmaston and I have seen a bit of life..." etc. etc, with some occasinal references to being vey-vey drunk.
