A Conversation for 2005 London Terror Attacks
Heart Goes out

I was in the gym in Southern California when I saw footage on CNN. No sound, but it was clear something terrible had happened.
I got home and turned on the TV to find the news broadcasting the same scary images over and over, and then the reactions of the LA Mayor, LAPD and LA County Sherriff. They spent a lot of time reassuring citizens that it was safe to travel around LA today, on the Metro rail and buses, etc.
This touches everybody, makes everybody shaky...
My sympathies go out to those who have lost loved ones, co-workers, friends and aquaintances, to those who have been injured, and to Londoners in general, who must collectively feel an incredible loss...
Triumph by remaining calm, by continuing your normal routine.
You are in my prayers.
love, and peace.

Truly, the method or magnitude is irrelevant when these things occur. Lives are lost, people are injured, confidence shaken, infrastructure destroyed...I'm just grateful for London's sake that more people have not been reported dead, and that it seems the object was more to create confusion and chaos; albeit at the expense of 45 precious lives.

It's at times like these that no one can escape a certain urgency about putting activity like this to a stop. At the same time, I can't help but wonder how, and despair that this has simply become what is to be expected now in our world.
If not outright war, then what? Constant surveillance, as another researcher suggested? When does a police force dedicated to general public safety become more than that, under the banner of counter-terrorism?
I hate to think that normal, innocent, ordinary people are to be sacrificed just to get some general revenge or attack an "establishment" or "principle" wholly unrelated and certainly not caused by such victims...it makes me sick to think of these Londoners just finishing breakfast, minding their own business, going to work, and then, this.
what can be done?

The object is allways to create confusion and chaos. Those monsters who have no value for human life would stop at nothing to achieve their goals.
Unfortunatly, terrorist attacks are happening more and more often all over the world. It is important to go on, but never ever get used to it. Impossible as it may sound it can happen.
My heart goes out to anyone who was hurt. Get better soon

Its unbelivable how barbaric some people can be.
My heart goes out to all of the victims in London

My kindest thoughts to all affected!
I do think Mr Blair put it well in his saying "It's through terrorism that the people that have committed this terrible act express their values and it's right at this moment that we demonstrate ours."

That is well and truly said!

There's not much we on the other side of the world can do, but express our heartfelt condolences to all those people affected by this henious crime.
My neighbour's 18 year old daughter is in London, also 2 of my cousins and their families. None affected, thank God, but it goes to show that these things affect all of humanity. What is it about 6 degrees of separation??
I'm just so, so sorry.

Howl with pride and confidence for you are yourself Let your spirit run free and soar to the heavens May you never become discouraged from life's problems and tight situations For you must stand and face your destiny without fear, but with courage in your heart And you must remember and be ready for tomorrow is another day.

I was reading the global news reactions on the BBC news site, and this caught my eye.
"It was especially cruel and barbaric to target hatred at a city that was celebrating the honour of hosting one of humanity's most respected festivals highlighting peace and unity, in a country which is hosting a summit of major world leaders discussing issues of global concern... If the attacks had been plotted to create a sense of fear, it backfired. It has instead aroused a shared belief in collective defence against acts of terror."

I'm British and was camping in the Cotswolds with friends yesterday - got a text from my brother just saying "Bombs in London. Advise check WAP etc". So we checked the WAP news but there wasn't much info, so I phoned him and the first thing I asked was for casualty figures, since the WAP hadn't specified. It was only 2 confirmed dead at that point. It was awful since we had no source of information about what as happening - I felt really cut off. Our trains home were delayed, but we didn't care. Sympathies to everyoe involved. And thanks to everyone for the solidarity being expressed with us Brits.

I also saw photographs or responses especially across the US - people hanging Union flags next to the Stars and Stripes on their houses, flags at half-mast and so on, but the one which really moved me was the sign (amidst flowers) outside the British Embassy in Washington DC which read "We stand with you".
