My housemate went to the World Bank protest in Prague recently. He reckons that the protesters are mostly non-violent, that the police are prone to over-reaction and that without violence the protest would get no media coverage. I reckon that the coverage would happen without the violence, especially as there is a growing media perception that some kind of new movement is developing.
I went to the Mayday protest in London, and inevitably a McDonalds was trashed. I was right there, and about 98% of the crowd pulled back as about a dozen masked lads dived in and smashed the windows. This was about the only thing that was covered on the news - ignoring all the guerilla gardening, reclaiming and turfing the streets and various other merry japes. Much better policing kept the mood merry, but the protest seemed unfocused and didn't achive much...
