hahaha, realized i need to talk about myself to prove i know music enough..
i've played violin 8.5 years starting in school but only had a private teacher for 4 years (pretty much exactly 4, actually)... which doesn't matter b/c i'm approximately on the same level as some people who started lessons before me, i just advanced too much in my first year b/c i already knew most of the stuff... i am currently studying bruch's concerto no. 1 in g minor for this "all-state" thing we have here in the states, specifically ny, which is supposed to be a big deal to get in to and pretty much is.. i tried last year with corelli's sonata "la folia" but only got a 97 (out of 100), partially b/c my former teacher (who was really tough but this amazing, well-known at least in russia, violin teacher) died the month before the audition and i wasn't completely ready. i studied with his brother-in-law for the last month before the audition but he wasn't able to pull it all together the same way (different schooling) and i was still upset, etc... he also taught viola and i was planning to take viola in senior year from my violin teacher b/c he didn't believe i was ready to start another instrument b/c i needed to be stronger on the violin first.. but my sister's cello teacher recommended an amazing teacher too and we didn't want to stop lessons completely with this guy...
so thats when i started viola, in may of 2001... so i have only played for 3/4 of a year, but i am on about the same level as i am on violin, just b/c its easy to transition to viola once you learn to read the music. i'm playing glinka's viola sonata in d minor (if that or the violin piece mean anything to you at all =P)...
i also am in a youth orchestra where i am in the most advanced ensemble and a chamber group (i will be switching chamber music to a better program next year, most likely) and play both instruments at, am in my school's more advanced orchestra playing viola b/c of the viola-shortage (i will probably be concertmaster next year (going to play violin next year)... i was 3rd best in my grade until one of the 2 violinists better than me moved, and the other violinist plays trumpet and her school schedule wouldn't allow her to be in the same orchestra and play trumpet for the orchestra).. and am in a quartet with ilana (jagged little girl or whatever her sn is, lol, the one who left a message after me in my last post "id like to join, but...") and 2 other friends in school (including the trumpetting violinist and a crazy cellist).... its fun, we were going to compete for lincoln center's chamber competition but didn't have time to rehearse enough (dvorak's american quartet, mvt 1)
ok, i'll shut up now.. just accept me, look at all the effort i took to blab that long and show off... eghhh

hmmm... what instrument? i'd like to be in for both and "switch" back and forth lol, if that makes sense to you, but if i have to choose 1, i'd like viola.. and i'd like to be as far up front as possible hehehehe... eh, i just don't want to be a second violin =P (or second viola, or second first violin, or second second violin =P)

okok!
I pretty much don't distinguish between different calibers of first and second instrument.. I just add people to the list in about the right place, and if we ever play, they can argue about it.
So I'm listing you a a first violin and as a viola.
There! Done!
welcome to the orchestra.
Now.. there was someone else lurking who I thought might want to join.. *goes player hunting*

no problem
Whereabouts are you, exactly? I'm sort of semi-informally getting together another Oxford meetup, having organised the last one. Interested?

I'm probably going to England in July, when is this Oxford thing? I presume there probably won't be a meeting in the northern part of Norway in the near future, hmm?

You've got some decent brass repertoire accumulating, I'd be happy to join. Trumpet player since 1981, M.M. in trumpet performance, 1995, currently play in 2 brass quintets, a jazz quartet, big band, and several other local orchestras. So my time to devote to this group might be limited. I would like to see the tone poems of Richard Strauss added to the repertoire list. The symphony and Chorale could do joint performance of Bach's mass in B Minor or Christmas Oratorio to give me an excuse to dust off my piccolo trumpet.
I hope Thomas is using his C trumpet. Makes many of those transpositions easier.
