Hmmm. That's very strange indeed. I have been told that when newbies sign up the numbers jump a few sometimes, so that there are gaps to start with. Why? Is it to make the site look busier than it is?
I thought I had a more fun idea. Instead of the researcher neightbours, we could see what was happening in our forum neighbours. We might find a lively discussion on something interesting. I wasn't going to suggest we but in, which would be rude, but just to look and report back.

OK, Coelacanth, I took your suggestion and checked the neighbors to my message center, er, centre. I had much better luck here.
