Hey Nigel 
Grey on the outside, orange on the inside (known as Japanese Pumpkin in Oz) are the best tasting imho.
I totally agree about limiting the number of fruit per plant, although I tend to go for four if they are big varieties - and seven if small.
Pumpkin lasagne is a drop-dead meal 
I can share the recipe with anybody who wants it.
