the Gnome at the Eureka! museum in ... oh, can't remember where it is (Leeds, Barnsley, Doncaster?) has a very thick Yorkshire accent.

A gnome that sounds like half the cast of Emmerdale?

Think I'm done here for the time-being. Anyone else think of anything in the meantime, let me know

Nice Entry MJ
Not sure about the foreign language links
This one is a news item about the French Gnome Liberation Front
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3353841.stm
maybe you could consider using this in replace of the French link you have.

Em
Glad you liked it
In regards to foeign language links, I've put them in other Entries for the EG, and they 'are' after all the 'official' ones. If anyone is further interested I'm sure they can google or search, as you did! And h2g2 is international after all
I don't particularly like linking to news items, as over time they have a tendency to disappear...

The BBC News archives stay put, MJ - I've used articles going back to 1999 with no problems.

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Mar 5, 2006
Interesting entry, MJ.
I'm not sure how appropriate your reference to Tolkien is, because he wasn't talking about little guys with pointy hats. His Gnomish language was the language of the Elves, and he very quickly changed his mind about the title "gnomish" and called it something else.
Gnomus is not a "suite" it is a musical piece.

G. Thanks
As far as Tolkien, I don't think Pratchett, Rowling and Colfer referred to gnomes as 'little guys with pointy hats' either, but all of the above refer to gnomes as a fantasy being
I'll change the suite reference to movement

I chanced upon a magazine article about gnomes & found this additional information -
Sir Frank Crisp populated a 30 foot 7,000 ton stone model of the Matterhorn with gnomes at his home, Friar Park - he had an unrivalled collection. This was later the home of George Harrison & some of the gnomes appear on the cover of his album 'All things must pass'.
Apparently 8% of the British population are estimated to own a gnome.
Any use?
