Anything happening on this front? Are we transferring the new Miner Gem Polishing Homepages? I'm happy to do this.

Sorry sorry sorry I got completely sidetracked by trying to catch up with everything else.
Right what I'm going to do is go through the list and put all the pages that have been sorted/cancelled into a new list so we see what's left.
Frood's done new pages, is everyone happy with those? Any tweaking to them needed? What else needs doing? I'm in the midst of doing the annoying bits (making up things) for the Miner Tutorial...at least it's all in my head so I just need to write it all down.
Any more?

Rightio, the new Official UG Pages (Miner, Polisher, Survival Guides and a few added bits and bobs) have gone 'live'. Hope every one is happy with the result

PS. A few Miners (broe being one!) have asked for access to the Miners Account so as they can aid in updating it and keep an eye on what's coming through the Pipeline. I think it may be wise if ALL Miners are given access to the h2g2 Miner's Account U235555 when given the keys to the Pig n Slag too for a number of reasons.
1. As evident by what's happened at The Post, if one person is left to do the bulk of the work, then it all falls in a heap if that person gets ill or wanders away from the net for a long period of time (ie; Shazz ill=Post ill. jwf moves house=CAC locks up and throws away the key, etc.)
2. It means that Miners, if they wish, can get to grips with larger Editing roles so as when the inevitable happens, that is the current editors fade away (heaven forbid) there's people already a good way experienced to fill shoes.
3. It could give stronger links between the AWWW, the Pig n Slag and the Pipeline, when Miners get more involved in the whole process of selecting and processing an Entry for UnderGuide and Front Page recognition.
The only problem I foresee is that too many Miners might spoil the shafts and the whole lot caves in. Perhaps then more senior Miners only (like broe and spynxx etc.) How does everyone else feel about it?

I like the <./>UnderGuide</.> page. It's pretty purple
Yup. The access details are there on the Pig and Slag, but people have to dig.
Frood (I originally typed Frodo here, by the way) we can announce the details when the two new miners find their way to the Pig and Slag. Which reminds me
I'm not too worried about miners gaining experience for editing (look how quickly you went into the role!), but you're right. It'll mean less initial confusion and emailing. Lord knows there was a lot of emails about you and your duties

Oh, well, I'm going to leave the UG Miners Account alone me thinks. It's enough keeping on top of CACkling!
Frodo? Now you, hands off me ring!
Glad you like the UnderGuide look. I will update the Most REcent Entries section as I send off the blurbs to Jim. (which incidentally I majorly guffed on last weekend
)
Now I'm off to eat. My stomach is groaning, and I gobbled down the Pit Pony hours ago.

The Three Girls/Girl Three one? I think that was perfectly fine. Didn't get involve because, I mean, what do I know? But the linking to the AWW from the word 'alternative' made sense to me and the whole thing looked fine to me. Jimster thought it was fine too, you'll remember. No guffing. Whatever guffing is.

U168592 Posted Jul 5, 2005
guffing? I don't really know what it is either, but it sounded good. making up words is grand...
Cheers though. It's awful hard not to offend everyone innit?

J Posted Jul 5, 2005
Y'know, I'm sure I offended people when I wrote the blurbs (but who cares?). Ben was just in a position to complain and it's certainly anyone's right to complain.
Someone's been trying to tell me that 'girt' is a word over in my journal.
A definition though it may have, if an Ohioan has never spoken it, I'm not going to use it as a word.

U168592 Posted Jul 5, 2005
Ah, as an Australian I have fond memories of miming the word 'girt' as I stood in class assembly "singing" the national anthem,
ahh with golden soil and wealth for toil, our land is girt by sea
but, I agree, it should rightfully be shunned. It's like kilt and rhubarb. Stupid, stupid words.

Moist. That word makes me giggle like a little school girl.
My favorite word - fiduciary.
Oh, what? Yeah, UG entries. I'm going to take another look at the mining pages and the UG main page again, more closely.

Ok, taken a look at the miner pages.
Where do you want people to volunteer? I wasn't clear on that. The survival guide, I guess, superceded the old volunteer page, so all current links saying 'go here to be a miner' link there. My nickname for one, but some cannot be as easily changed.

U168592 Posted Jul 5, 2005
Ah, well I thought at each of the Miners and Polishers Home Pages the final para says what to do if you want to be one. And I had a thorough look through all the UnderGuide related pages to do with Volunteers and Updated them accordingly (it was only really the Editors Page and the UnderGuide HeadQuarteers that had these links), seeing as making some defunct (the five into two) has negated the need to change any. To be honest, it's just your nickname now I think If there's other places you can think of whwre the Volunteer section may have a different link, let me know and I'll organise it properly.
Suggested Next Steps....
J Posted Jul 5, 2005
I'll change my nickname soon.
See, I would've put the page you intended for people to volunteer to (the Miner homepage A1092494) into the slot of the old volunteer page. Largely because people will see the conversations below the miner survival guide A1092539 and volunteer there, or not see any volunteering conversations below the homepage and not volunteer there.

What's wrong with the word kilt? Girt though, is ludicrous.
I had a look through the Miners and the HQ page today before giving the links to someone who wanted to know how the UG worked. I like . They look good. It was well worth doing even if nothing comes from the original reason for the overhaul.
One comment on the HQ page, and it might just be the way I read it because I'm used to the old version. Does the list of three quotes need to lead to something? They used (I think) to lead to the line 'The UnderGuide is another step in h2g2's evolution'.
On a different page - was the guidelines page part of what you looked Frood? There's a bit I didn't fully understand. The third guideline.
"Entries should be unsuitable for the Edited Guide - UnderGuide entries may also conform to the Guidelines for the Edited Guide, but for example, pieces of humour and poetry which conform to the letter of the Edited Guidelines and yet are still unsuitable for the Edited Guide, and they may be able to find a home in the UnderGuide."
Is it that there's an extra and in that last bit perhaps? If it's not part of the overhaul I thinking of replacing it with something like
"Entries should be unsuitable for the Edited Guide - Entries might conform to the letter of the Guidelines for the Edited Guide, but by being, for example, pieces of humour or poetry, yet be unsuitable for the Edited Guide. Such entries would still be able to find a home in the UnderGuide."
(psst Froodo, I've just seen Jodan online - the whole Florida trip looks like a ploy. Get the cormorants out of his office! How did we come to have cormorants anyway?)

I was in a hotel in Georgia. Still am, actually. Almost in Florida.
Good point about the three quotes. I think (maybe) that was Ben's doing. It's important, so it should fall into a context.
