It's good to be back writing about sport in the Post for three weeks- the women's football (soccer) is very good, you know. Last night's Norway-France game I was at had an unfeasible number of people in US university sweatshirts- but none of them were wearing Boston College shirts, even though the only player in the game who plays at the US is BC student Laura Georges of France.
And why are Notre Dame called the Fighting Irish anyway?

uuuuummmmm,we delve into legends here. may i just plead that Irish immigrant Catholics had a large part in establishing the university, away from Harvard, Boston College, Yale amd the rest of the 'elite' East Coast schools ? there is also a strong Italian component in Notre Dame history.

And do the Italians fight with the Irish? And Notre Dame's a French cathedral as well- I'll have to look up what it actually means!
