Actually I still think Marjin's correct. If there isn't a previous number then you don't add anything. Fine.

Exactly my point. There is no previous number to 1, so you add nothing to 1, so the next number is 1, and the next number after that is 4.

For Marjin's explanation to be correct you would need the sequence to be:

1 1 4 8 13 21 30 36 ?

But Danny's explanation of the letters of the present number being added to itself is in accord with the sequence Greebo gave.

And why am I agruing the case for Danny when I was obviously wrong myself? Dunno....

Starting with the first whole positive number greater than zero (ie one) take the number of letters in the spelt out name of the number and add this to give the next number.

One= 3 1+3= four 4+4= eight 8+5 = thirteen 13+8 = twenty one 21+9 = thirty 30+6 = thirty six 36+9 provides the solution therefore 45.

Mind you to do it properly we started with nothing which is 7 letters so the sequence should really be.

Nothing 7 12 18 26 35 45 54 63 71 etc

Can I guess??? My guess is 40.42857143 as to why it's cos thats what Microsoft Excel said it was !!!!!
