one issue DNA didn't address in his hitchhiker books. as the international space station is showing, yes, they all cost considerable amounts of money in a closed enviornment (not to mention the shipping and handling costs.)
but yes, i totally agree with the concept of living below your means, in order to be able to own, not lease.
i could probably live without cable teevee, but am afraid that the telephone and internet is gonna have to stay.

When I wrote the comment about leasing air, I thought about all the sci-fi stories set on the moon where residents did, in fact, have to pay for air and water. And we do have to pay for clean water here (I bet prices will rise as clean water becomes a scarcer resource in the future). I draw the line at leasing food, though.
Speaking of leasing food, I'm offended/angered/ over big corporations that are genetically engineering seeds and patenting same. Plants are part of the genetic inheritance of this planet and belong to everyone, not to a bunch of fat cats who've decided to claim them.
(They say you become more conservative as you get older. Not me - I'm getting more liberal. By the time I'm 80, I'll be burning my bra and getting arrested at various protests. 'Right on power to the people dig it dig it dig it...' )

'they' have even patented brands of water and the different purifiers to filter tap water, besides the various 'air purifiers' and 'ionizers' where buying new filters for the unit are about as expensive as the Initial Investment.
p.s. more liberal in some ways, more conservative in others, but i doubt i'll be burning my jock strap anytime soon.
