Where are the Proto-Bulgarians from?

Proto-Bulgarians first have populated the valley between the mountains of Pamir (old name Imeon) and Hindokoush. They have been one of the folks - first named Balkh, Balkhara etc. - that have contributed to the very old civilisation in this region.
Later they have moved to the steppes of rivers Done and Volga. Their land then have been named Bolgar, Bulgar etc. These steppes have been added to Russia many senturies later, as one clan of the Bulgarians have already moved to the Balkan Peninsula and settled still now - this is Bulgaria. Many others who have stayed in the steppes of Done and Volga have formed the population there. Today, some compact groups of Bulgarians you can find in some regions of Russia, Ukraine and Moldavia...
