A Conversation for Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

In the book of this title William Dalrymple tells of his extraordinary journey, following Marco Polo's route to The Great Khan's summer palace at Xanadu. Due to various border disputes, this is almost the first time since the original journey that the same route could be followed. After what appears to be a complete dead-end, just a few miles from completion, they find themselves in the ruins of Xanadu, where they recite this poem. A bit cheesy, that, but somehow, Dalrymple really makes you feel the importance of the place.
