A Conversation for Talking Point: Have You Ever Met Anyone Famous?

Having lived in Manhattan many years ago, it was quite common to see, or run into famous people almost everywhere. Ran into Cher in an elevator in FAO Schwartz toy store, and former mayor Robert Wagner on Lexington Ave. I am not the kind of person to walk up and talk to famous folks, so I just kind of acknowledge their presence and go on my way. The one exception was in Toronto (where I live now)in 1978. My wife and I were in a local restaurant/watering hole with my brother-in-law, and John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd came into the place, and sat beside us at the bar while we were waiting for a table. My brother-in-law, being a journalist, had to strike up a conversation with the Saturday Night Live alumni/Blues Brothers, and they bought us a couple of rounds of drinks and we chatted for about an hour with them. Strangely enough, they were just regular guys, just a bit more visible because of their fame and notoriety. I, personally, would not have approached them, but once engaged, they were quite affable. We talked mostly about music, as they were going to do a gig at another bar in the neighbourhood in a few days. Nice guys. There you go, my brush with celebrity.
