A Conversation for Talking Point: Have You Ever Met Anyone Famous?

On the responsibilities of Celebrities in the Public Sphere

I work in a coffee shop in New York City in the East Village. On several occasions, David Cross has come in to order coffee. We suspect he leaves around there. Anyway, the first time he came in, we were all a little speachless. For those that don't know, David Cross is an American comedian. He had his own show on HBO with Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show). He's currently on the Fox sitcom "Arested Developement". Anyway, we all sort of just gaped at him. He's really unmistakeable. There's a weirdness to his face that says he could be no one else.
So maybe the third time he comes in, my boss, this nice girl named Maya, feels compelled to come up to him and just say, "I just wanted to say, I love your show." And he gives her this look and just says "Thanks" in this very "Screw you" kind of way.
For the rest of the day, Maya's saying that she was really stupid and all this other self depricating stuff. But really, Cross was out of line. As a celebrity, half of his job is being kind to his fans when he's out in the world. I know it can be a pain to be constantly recognized, but really, we didn't ask the guy to come in to the store, even less did we ask him to keep on coming in. Someone was going to say something eventually, and he can just as easily be grateful for the praise as a snotty jerk.

I'm quite cynical about celebrities. It's not like I've met lots of them, but your average tv star seems to me to be such an idiot that I'm not at all surprised by your anecdote. That's why it comes as such a surprise when a celeb actually says something intelligent!
