Sorry - I was posting on Peta's behalf and I don't tend to recheck threads if they are not really my domain.

How can I help?

DoctorMO and I were wondering what had happened to the email Peta was going to send us last week. Peta has unsubcribed from this thread so we thought we would try to communicate telepathically with you. And it worked smiley - smiley.

Well Peta is kinda busy with meetings and paperwork at the moment. So you have to bear with her but I know it is right up on her list of things to do.

You mean in this thread? Or in h2g2 generally. I very much doubt if the answer is known. I don't get the impression that there is an imbalance one way or another.

It's an easy mistake to make. Try not to make assumptions. I assumed you were male but then you said you looked like the picture on my page which made me think "Oh no, I've done it again." 'Cos even us ardent feminists aren't immune to that one.

*puts academic hat on*

There's no way of getting a statistically valid answer using a poll because the sample is self-selecting and there are many reasons why such a self-selecting sample would be skewed. For example, women may be more inclined than men to hide their gender on the web because they feel vulnerable to abuse. I know several researchers on h2g2 who are female but wouldn't want that to be known because they have had bad experiences in chat rooms and newsgroups (but not here on h2g2, I hope, although some male researchers cannot put aside learned behaviour patterns even here).

OTOH I cannot see why it matters. Why do you want to know? Would it matter to you if males were very much in the minority?

no, just an observation, unlike most I regard property 'Gender' as a Null whenever I encounter somone and there for don't care. I don't even care if it's somwone face to face.
