Looking for a sub for a University Project
Friar Started conversation Jul 18, 2002
I was wondering if anyone would like to sub for a University of Life Entry I'm writing.
The entry is moving along pretty well, and I was wondering if someone could take a look at it.
The Article will be in the Department of Biology, potentially the dept of medicine. The project is called: The Human Shoulder.
A783678 - the article introduction and links to other articles in project
and
A783948 - the University Porject description
Some sections are more complete than others, and some sections need major revisions for public consumption (esp. the scetion on the nervous system), but it's far along enough for a good first look.
The first few sections and teh bit on common causes of pain and weakness in the shoulder are mostly done.
Thanks for your attention!

ps. I know that everybody's got a bunch of projects running now, and this one's still a few weeks down the road, but I was looking for some preliminary advice.

Hey Friar
I should let you know that I was thinking of offering, but thought you might prefer someone with some medical background. Let's see what happens. But if you get stuck give me a shout.

Bels, it would probably be better if I DIDN'T have someone with a medical background. After all, if I can explain it to you, then it will make sense. Medical jargon won't be confusing to someone with w medical background. I could easily slip medical jargon by someone who already understands it. However, if you were to run across something that didn't make sense, then I could change it until it DID.
However, I know these projects are a major commitment, so I'll take anyone interested in helping me.
I can only offer responsiveness and openmindedness. I like making these things better.
Friar
ps. check out the site before you decide
pps. Do you think that this belongs in Deptof Biology or Medicine. Right now it's in Biology (as there is no dept. of Anatomy).

I'm aware of the 'ignorance is bliss' argument, but disagree. If you were writing a medical textbook you would probably submit it to a specialist medical publisher who would use editors, proofreaders and so on who were experienced in this field. It makes sense.
Even if I were to look up and check in a medical dictionary every term you use (which I would have to do) that still wouldn't tell me what makes sense and what doesn't. And I'm sure there are all sorts of other reasons to prefer someone who has some knowledge of the subject-matter.
And as for whether it's Biology or Medicine, I wouldn't have the faintest idea.

Seriously good point bels, thanks.

ps. I was working under the assumption that I would of course make MEDICAL sense. . .sheesh, I was just hoping that the masses would be able to understand me. Which is rare because I'm usually a blathering idiot

Hi Friar,
I've asked on the Subs list is anyone is willing to have a go at your project. No replies yet, but let's see what happens

Not a ton of interest in anatomy and pathology eh?
Imagine my surprise
In any event, anyone interested should know that a lot of work is already done, and I can work pretty fast on a lot of stuff. So when corrections need to get made, I can work.
Active participation is certain.

"Not a ton of interest in anatomy and pathology eh?"
- That's only one of several possibilities. It's early days yet.
"Active participation is certain."
- A valuable assurance, and one which I can vouch for from personal experience.

*exhibiting an undying trust in Bels*
I know it's early, but I like to stoke the fires a bit. . .renew my conversation every few days.
Anyway, I've been doing loads of writing, but I'm kinda in a holding pattern on this one. I'm thinking about the writing workshop to get an idea of what needs working out, but I would rather work with one or two people a bunch than a bunch of people once or twice.
did that make any sense???

"undying trust" Gimme a break!
Writing Workshop is a chicken-and-egg thing. If more people commented there, that might encourage people to submit entries. If more people submitted entries, that would encourage more comments.
I've recently been putting entries in there in preference to Peer Review. I haven't been getting tons of comments, but the ones I have got are mostly very good ones. But then, like you, I don't always get many comments in PR either - it all depends on how sexy the subject-matter is. In fact I am almost at the point where I can put an entry into PR and get it picked without anyone saying anything about it at all. And the WW has had quite a few success stories.
You might like to put your introductory Uni entry into the WW and see what happens.
Common ground is that the WW is not working as it should. A number of people want it abolished. I and a number of others disagree. There's been a conversation going on about it for a couple of months now. There's rather a long backlog, but you don't have to start there - just go from Posting 132 and read on. That's at F47999?thread=180625&skip=120&show=20

I read the postings and gave a too-lengthy comment to that conversation. I'm glad you pointed that out to me Bels.
I'll follow that conversation now too. It's a great debate, I hope we can find a solution.
There were lots of good suggestions, and I agree with you, there shold be some kind of "step-down" from PR, and WW CAN work like that.

There are moves afoot to re-write the guidelines for the WW, but that's probably just to make it simpler to clear out the dreck. The italics have also asked for suggestions as to how to encourage more people to go there, so if you have any ideas on that, post to that thread.
On a completely different tack, do you know anything about the work of Dr John E Sarno and his Tension Myositis Syndrome? He's written a couple of books about it ('Mind Over Back Pain' and 'Healing Back Pain - The Mind-Body Connection') and I was wondering if you had any comments.

I have not heard of him, but that doesn't mean much. I will keep an eye open for his books, if I can find one in somebody's office I'll ask about it.

Hi Friar
Researcher 182633 Name: Danny B. has offered to be the sub for this. I would still be happy to take it on, but Danny does have some medical background and I haven't, which was my only reason for demurring earlier.
Danny suggested tossing a coin.
Would you like to break the deadlock?

Well, I've read a bunch of Danny's stuff and he'd be great.
But, I've been following you around for a while, so we work pretty well.
Frankly, whatever you guys think.
If somebody's really busy and wants to let another have a crack at it, that's fine.
I'll think about it, and get back to you if I have any great ideas (not appearing likely), but otherwise, I'd ues a quarter.

Danny and I have been in contact about this - and it's me. I'm really looking forward to it.
There's a whole bunch of medical dictionaries and glossaries at
http://www.jump.net/~fdietz/glossary.htm#Medicine so if you have time take a look and let me know if there are any you particularly recommend.
