Hi Jim,
I don't want to be too confident but I think I have some positive results atm. I set the MTU in the router to *enabled/1440 and after some tweaking around I managed to update a huge test-entry!
I will let Shazz edit Post-stuff etcetera, you know, the big entries and when I come back from my meeting tonight I will check if it still works.
If it does then I suspect that some of the stuff that we users have to get through before we reach the actual h2g2-site is seriously outdated. In my (AS/400)-field of expertise we had this problem about 7 years ago! In those days IBM still put most of their money on Token Ring so their AS/400 Ethernet-hardware was not the best you could get. Those problems were solved at least 5 years ago and I have never heard of it coming back again.
Weird... Anyway, I'll keep you posted so don't put anymore work into this for us two at the moment.
If this is indeed the problem I owe Marijn a drink
Later,
TM.

If you come to London you will get your chance.
I have also a vague memory about the same troubles at work, when data had to go over both ethernet and token ring. The difference in headerlength made maximum length packets to large for the other, and we had to reduce the maximum data length.
Or one system defined MTU as including the header, and the other as excluding...
Let's hope this will keep working.

Well I'm still waiting for Shazz to complete a full Post-edition tomorrow. The new settings don't seem to compromise my connection-speed so if this fixes it I'll be more than happy. And it'll probably save Jim time
As for the beer at the meet : I have no idea whether we will be able to make it for the wintermeet this year. I just received a couple of "nice" blue envelopes from the tax-department that charged me a ridiculous amount of 'pre-tax'. I will have to wait and see wait comes of my adamant protesting... We're not talking Euros and cents here so... Anyway; if we can't make it to London this year we will most certainly be there for the summermeet. And we'll probably stay in England a little longer than the weekend.
Don't worry, that beer will stay on the 'things-to-do-'list.

Don't pour it yet, it might get stale.
I had my own blue enveloppes, returning somewhat of the rediculous amount I had to pay earlier, so now I can pay for my trip.
If not this summer, there might be a next Dutch meet sometime.

Oh I don't doubt it
Sorry if I'm a bit 'brief' at the moment, I am currently at war with the F******G Peer Review System. What a vague procedure, incredible! Especially if you haven't submitted anything for years. There's no logic to the screens at all in some respects. Heck, I might write an entry about that!

BTW : It was indeed the MTU-setting
I have no idea if I am allowed to post links again yet.... but here :
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/280/
you will find how to set the MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit) to the proper value in windows. So if you ever have the problem...

Have a look at http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/30/ also, as TM's link is for NT/2000/XP.
It is an excellent site for tweaking your system

I'm glad that's all sorted out. What I don't understand is why more people aren't having the same problem...

Greebo says that AOL helped her, but she is still getting spasmodic results - we'll keep you informed.
Meanwhile, I am just enjoying 'getting my hands dirty' again!

You can guess how many online-hours she had made since last night...
Anyway, thanx to Jim and Marijn(yes I know you spell it Marjin but I'm dutch ) for helping us out here.
