Actually, using that link I turned nearly all the squares near the ant to black before running the program. I let it run and it has been running for the past 20 minutes. I started to think that it wasn't going to make a highway but then it suddenly did!
Is there any known black-white combination that will stop that from happening?

Really good Entry, Amy. Fascinating.
There is an old EG Entry that has some common ground, though this one's far better. Maybe worth a link? A197453

Thanks Pin. As you can see from Post 16, I've already got that one spotted but you've reminded me that I need to sort out the categorisation. My article should be in the same bit of the filing system as A197453 but that one has been put under 'physics.' Complexity theory is a theory of computation so either maths or computers would make sense but not physics. I'd prefer maths. Does anyone have any views? Si, who wrote A197453 has elvised, unfortunately.

A given entry can be categorized in more than one place. You can request that yours go into maths, and that the one on complexity also be listed there.

Good idea, Mikey.
I've finished putting in the links and made one or two minor changes. I've implemented those suggestions that seemed good to me. I feel it's just about ready to go if and when it is picked.
Thank you to everyone who made comments and suggestions.

Wonderful entry!
Though I don't think we're to link to category pages in the EG. I'm sure there was a reason for it, but it eludes me at the moment...

We're definitely not allowed. And no, I don't know the reason either.

I've been looking for a Convo I can dimly remember in which one of the italics explained this, but I can't place it.
I'm pretty sure they said it was because Category Pages could potentially need to be reorganised, leaving broken or wrong links in EG Entries.

And, in fairness, they are in the process of reorganising them as we speak.

Very good, Amy. I've been having fun experimenting on the simulation you gave.A lot of the starting set-ups I try seem to result in a highway being built a lot sooner than in the blank set-up. Is that normal? And is there only the one type of highway? No need to answer these in the article of course - the GUT philosophy bit is the main point.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
