The real way the invention of the infamous "Plate of Chips" came about though the poor production values of the miner/scientists of Astral 4.

This appears to be a work of fiction. We're looking for fact in this part of the Guide. It can be amusing, but it has to be true. Please have a look at the Writing-Guidelines and remove this from Peer Review.

Okay... no probs. But Isn't there wikipedia for that? I mean I thought that was the unique selling point of h2g2... I kind of found this through reading hitchhikers. Erm how do I remove it?

I don't mean to offend by comparing to wikipedia (can't you edit posts on here, I was trying to add to the previous post but it wouldn't work).

You can't edit posts after you've done them. They are there for all time.
There are two parts to h2g2. There's the Unedited Guide, which you can put anything you like into. You do this just by creating the entry. You don't have to submit it to anything. Then there's the Edited Guide, which is for factual stuff only.
The Edited Guide is often compared to wikipedia, but it is a lot more interesting. We try not to just present the bare facts, but wrap everything in a more personal presentation, to make it interesting to read. Sometimes we attempt humour, but not every writer is able to write funny stuff.

To remove it, click on PeerReview and find your entry in the list. There will be an x beside it. Click on the x.
You entry will still form part of the Unedited Guide and will be there for you and all your friends to see.

To find "Peer Review", you may have to first select "Contribute". A little ways down you'll find a "Peer Review" link in a paragraph of text.
Find your entry and select "Remove" at the far right. Your entry will still be saved and exist, it just won't be in the wrong place any longer.
Good luck, and welcome to the oddity that is H2G2.

Hi FordsTowel. Note that there is a link to Peer Review in the left margin, and I provided one in my posting too.

Right I think its out now. So what can you do with the Unedited Guide? Wheres the forum for this?
Just out of curiousity (and noseyness) what kind of database system do you use for holding all the entries (there seem quite a few there). Is it MySQL/Oracle whatever. The reason I ask is I did a fair bit of databases on my degree... and well I'm always interested in that stuff.
Anyway, thanks I'll have a bit of a look around.

Of course as well as the 300,000 entries in the Unedited Guide, there are nearly 7,000,000 conversation postings held in the database. I think Jim Lynn is probably the only person who knows the technical details of what sort of a DB it is.
There are lots of things you can do in the Unedited Guide:
1. Leave the entry there for people to find using the Search engine.
2. Start a club to promote it
3. Join an existing club and promote it there
4. Submit it to the Alternative Writing Workshop, which is for creative stuff which doesn't match the Writing Guidelines
5. Send it to the h2g2 weekly newspaper
6. etc.etc.

Ah... a group about the entry... sounds an interesting idea. How do I start a group?
"And you also"
I'm great thanks.

You can also provide information regarding your interests, expertise, hobbies, and such on your personal space. And, while there, promote your entries.
Mine is a pretty simplified - even minimilistic - version of this. Click on a researcher's name to be taken to their Personal Space.

Cheers. Looks interesting... I'll give mine a bit of thought.
