Well, your fairly accurate about your Downeast Maine info. However, trying to "fit in" with the locals can often prove disasterous. Whatever you do, NEVER try to imitate the accent. You WILL NOT be able to! The Downeast Mainer accent is one that takes years to learn, and can vary imensely. If you really want to try to sucessfully use a Downeast Maine accent here are a few tips
1. the letter "r" is Only pronounced when the speaker has no other option. For example, my name, Ryan. You can't pronounce Ryan with out pronouncing the r. When ever possible exchange the "r" sound wih an "ah" sound. Like you're sticking out your tounge for the doctor. Lobster = Lobstah.
2. The word wicked is one of the most impotrant words in the Downeast vocabulary. Wicked can be used in oh so many ways. "Wicked good Deah" is how you say really, really good. The word wicked is used as a exagerating adjective. It is almost used just like really except it is much more powerful.
With the regular use of Wicked and the lack of pronunciation of the letter r you will be doing much better attempting to fit in.
Do NOT ask a local stupid questions. If you are in a costal town, and even more important an islanfd town, NEVER ask how to get to the ocean! You will find it much quicker if you wander around for a while, if you ask a local you will end up as far away from the acean as you possibly could get.
Well that's my Downeast Maine info, if you have or are going to visit Downeast Maine, especially Bar Harbor, or Acadia Nat'l Park. Ask me and i might have some great places to eat and fun stuff to do.
