A Conversation for h2g2 Feedback - Feature Suggestions

Hello,

I'm relatively new to the site, but have found that it would be wonderful to be able to bookmark entries that are particularly useful to me and that I can see going back to time and again.

What I am imagining could look something like the My Conversations popup window. Each time a user finds a page they really like or might need to go back to a lot (a GuideML page they really like, or their ACE's personal space, etc...) they could click a button and that page would be added to their "Favorites" page (or I guess, "Favourites" since this is a British site - sorry, I'm an American). ANYWAY, this would mean a link in the left frame called "Favourites" that would open this window.

I did look through the features under discussion page and found this one which is similar, but not exactly the same:

"An icon for book-marking communities, to be used instead of the default browser bookmarking icon."

Same idea, mine is a bit more aimed at entries as I have yet to look at communities.... Hope you like.
Thanks!
Charlie

You can already do this manually, but it is a bit of a chore.

For details, and some examples, take a look at my personal page. The part at the top called 'Wet Paint', there are some links there, some of which should work for you. Mostly they cannot be used by you, because they are set up for me to go straight into edit mode, and will deny you access. But (and please confirm this for me), there are three that you can use:-

'NEW' should create a new guide entry, which (and this is the part I don't know) are probably new entries on your page.

'soon' should get straight to the ComingUp page, which I have found awkward to reach via the peer review button.

'old' should just bring up an extended list of all my conversations, and again I am not sure, but this should work for you too.

To see how that was done, also on my page is a link called 'GuideML for this page'. If you press that (and again, please confirm), you should be able to see how 'Wet Paint' actually works, and also the other links, including the GuideML button. Note that also, commented out with <!-- comment -->, there are examples of other types of link.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm, Let's see, Not sure if I know exactly what you are hoping will happen, but I clicked on New from your page and made A2159697. I do also see it on my Personal Space List of Entries. Is that what you were hoping for?
Check my page and see if you see it there I guess?

And the GuideML link for this page link does show me the code for your page.

So what you're saying is that in order for me to "bookmark" a page, I need to put that "New" button on my page and everytime I come across something I like and want to keep forever, I should copy the guide number for that page, go to my personal space and hit New (or whatever I call it) and put it in an entry made of my bookmarks that I can then always reference under "My Entries" on my Personal Space?

Works for me, for now.
H2G2 certainly is cool, but it's clunky. Finding my way around is a bit of a chore (much like I imagine the Guide felt to Arthur). It's fine for me to have to work through this site. But it's somewhat frustrating to keep needing to reference things and not being able to quickly since when I want to, it's usually when I am writing and if I have to go looking again for that great GuideML page, then I lose my train of thought... ERGH!

Anyway, thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll have more suggestions as I seem to be that kind of person. And if you don't mind, I'll be lifting your code for the New button so I can use it for now. OK?

Thanks!
c

Old Hairy has pretty much described it.

<./>GuideML-LINK</.> shows the way to link on your space or via new page.
I created a whole page of places at A989508 that I want to remember and then linked to the page from my space so I can always find pages quickly

smiley - ok

Splendid. The new entry is yours, so next time you feel like writing one, you can just edit that one. I assure you I cannot edit it.

You seem to have got the gist of my advice. The only thing I can add is that when I originally did the things on my page, with those commented out bits included, the page seemed to be much too ego-centric. So, I hid the most frequently used stuff under the wet paint sign, and hid the rest. One day I'll move the commented stuff onto a special directory page, with a 'DIR' button in the wet paint.

Anyway, glad I could help.

The iCan site has made it technically possible to bookmark articles in DNA sites. This hasn't been enabled for h2g2 (or any other DNA site) yet, but it's a possible future feature...
