I'd agree that the opening sentence is may be not quite the best. It somehow sounds as if it is leading on to something different. Perhaps just go straight to the next para & tack that sentence on after describing the ear structure?

I recently suffered from a blocked ear & was quite surprised that I could bypass the GP & just book for ear syringing with the nurse. Fortunately just using olive oil cleared the blockage. A helpful tip, if you don't have a dropper to use; an icing syringe nozzle sits in the outer ear well & then you can drizzle in a drop or two of oil from the oil bottle lid.

Also, I mentioned that busy G.P's surgeries often delegate this routine task to 'Nurse Practitioners'. Any nurses out there? Is this the correct way to refer to such a nurse?
