The big bang so far is just the simplest theory we have to explain the fact that every thing in the universe seems to be moving away from everything else (for the most part, the Andromeda galaxy, for instance will collide into this one in some 10 billion years or so)
What you should know about cosmology is this. Everything is still open for argument, but keep in mind that even if the universe crunches eventually, we still may not ever be able to visit the satellite galaxies around this one.
We may never even see the other side of this galaxy.
