Currently a single platform terminus of the East London Line it also has two national rail platforms.
By approximatley 2010 New Cross Gate will no longer be a terminus, instead the underground trains will switch onto the national rail lines and continue though the National rail stations Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill, and Sydenham at which point it splits off to Crystal Palace or continues onto Penge West, Anerley, Norwood Junction and finally West Croydon from where if a few minutes you can walk to the tram stop or the the centre of Croydons shopping area.

I tried to change from tram to train at West Croydon once; the signage is terrible there! There's a tram stop, a bus station and a train station all in close proximity, all called West Croydon... eventually, after walking up and down the street about five times, and with my train due to leave in about two minutes, I had to ask for directions in a shop

It wasn't made any easier by the fact that on the way home, I had to come through EAST Croydon - which also has a train station, a bus station and a tram stop all called East Croydon, all next to each other...
Croydon can really push one's patience to its limits

Croydons two railway stations couldn't be more disimilar.
East Croydon Station is fresh, modern and delivers you into a part of town that's clean and impressive, West Croydon isn't and doesn't.
As I travelled throug New Cross Gate I relised it has four not two national rail platforms, doh!

You often see "studenty" type around new cross gate because of it's proximity to goldsmiths college (artical A253469)
