Goldsmiths College, University of London
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
I had the opportunity to go to other more prestigious colleges but for many reasons I ended up at Goldsmiths (New Cross South East London for those of you who do not know). I have to say it was the best thing that could have happened to me. I did my special subject at UCL, which was fine but a little starchy for me. Whereas Goldsmiths is rather more informal. I got the inpression that UCL was an extension of Public School but Goldsmiths wanted individuals who would challenge the accepted ideas of the time. The history department was full of individuals (lecturers and students alike) which always made for a lively student life.
One of the bad things is the Union, whilst the drinks were good (well what drinks aren't?) there was no live music from anyone who had a sniff of a recording contract in the three years I was there! This from the college that spawned Blur.
Famous ex-students (other than Blur) include Damien Hurst, Julian Clary and at least one Turner Prize nominee from the last umpteen years.
I will update andamend this with other thoughts and memories when I can . . .
