Yes, sorry. I'd gone far too serious in my comments. We are flying away from the Blunketts and Woodheads of Earth to discover Vodka Spots on a Yellow Submarine in a swimming pool in a giant spaceship whose existance is largely the result of a bunch of virtual beach looving students, said virtual beach having, amongst other things, a thriving donut industry and laws rendering swimwear if not illegal then at least unfashinable Seriousness is *not* an option

Som Uch. Yes, Som Uch was a great African tribal leader. It means 'Walks with Stubble', a demonstration of a small, confusing detail of the local language - the word for 'stubble' and 'bent double' are both the same, though luckily for Som Uch the version recorded in the history books isn't 'Walks with Bent Double'. Som Uch did have a relative called 'Walks Bent Double' which translates in the local language to 'Slo Uch'.
Hey, I'm having fun at this! Wonder what name we could give to this tribe?

Definitely. Or the coming-of-age injury ceremony. Apparently, some of these tribes (IRL) have rather barbaric ways of proving that the lad tribesperson in their equivelant of baggy jeans and Walkman (or even the nervous lad tribesperson with the library pass and goofy glasses) has come of age is to stick things in them. I am quite sure this is definitely a minority thing (might not even be Africa, please throw virtual stones at me at will if I am wrong). No, that's too barbaric for such a peace orientated adventure as ours. You're right, we'll have it as a punishment.

We have Po Uch, the currency bearing bag. I'm working on what the currency is... maybe in a few posts time

Cakewalker Posted Jun 21, 2000
Wow, currency! This could even warrant it's own page on the Guide - how's about it? h2g2's first online tribal community

Don't see why not.. looks to Cakewalker for confirmation....
though we may have to extend past just Uch words... I cant think of many...

Cakewalker Posted Jun 22, 2000
Oh, definitely. Anyone with a place in their heart for the syllable 'uch' may join. I'll think about further developments of our tribe, though of course, it will always owe it's origins to the great Swim to Jupiter. Wonder how I can incorporate it into our Tribe's folklore.

*Thinks that in most cases "Uch" is usually preceded by a "o"...*
Don't we already have an "Online Community"??? Or is this going to be differant...?
And how about words with "Gle" in them???

And lo, so it came to pass that in the fourth posting of the Glorious Swim to The Mighty Jupiter the Tribe was born. And there was much rejoicing, except for Gro Uch, who kept telling everyone how much better it was before the asteroid belt, the whinging sod. Anyway, The Tribe did rejoice, milk, honey and vodka did flow and the people were happy. This was known as Pa Rty in the tongue of the ancients.

And lo, it was during the time of the great unknowingness, before even the finding of The Ever Groovy Yellow Submarine, that the soon-to-be-called-Tribe did pass unto the Asteroid Belt, where the Giant Belt Loop of Destiny did push them on unto their Destiny.
Book of Uch, Chapter Three, Verse Twenty one.

I guess if we have a book of Uch, we could have the book of Gle, too - they could be the respective books of the two halves of the tribe living either side of the river. Of course, the two tribe halves regard each other with quiet contentment (remember, a peaceful Yellow Submarine )
