Undoubted highlight of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson's wrap party, spies inform me, was a "bloopers" reel. And undoubted star of that was actress Liv Tyler, repeatedly trying but failing to get an arrow out of her quiver, while sitting on horseback amid a raging battle. Jackson, too, was featured - caught in the middle of a Queenstown snowstorm. Best live act was Jackson leading a haka (Maori war dance) of American stars including Elijah Woods and Sean Astin.

Sorry if someone's already posted this - I started to check all the postings but then realized there were 3 million of them!
Anyone looking for first-hand info on the shoot should check out http://www.mckellen.com which is the website of Sir Ian 'Gandalf' McKellen. There are photos and stories from the principal photography.

Something you might Keep in mind with the filming location is that New Zealand not only had the look that Peter Jackson was looking for, but the price and taxes as well. Also the community/government opened up and was extremely supportive of the movie. I do not think that England would have just looked at it as just another film, some people not at all being as nice about the inconveniences and the New Zealanders, from everything I have been reading.
Just my 2 cents worth

They couldn't have filmed much of it in England anyway (Terrain is completey wrong) as I've said in previous posts I still think Scotland would've been the best bet for Mordor. Theres something about the light up here that makes anything filmed sharpley (Not soft-focus like in the abysmal 'Braveheart') seem peculularly real. 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' was filmed in Scotland if it's any help.
