I know you don't care for Tom Bombadil, but I've just finished reading that part of the book and the Barrow Downs, and I find myself becoming increasingly annoyed with Peter Jackson for mucking about with the story so much, particularly for leaving out the Old Forest, Bombadil and the Barrow Wight. It got me thinking who might play Bombadil in the film. Who's annoyingly, sickeningly, want-to-kick-him-in-the-bum-ingly always upbeat, soppy and smiley wiley? Oh yeah, him http://www.hackneygazette.co.uk/polopoly_fs/1.1417389.1340273445!/image/1210428885.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_630/1210428885.jpg

him? I always think of Simon Callow doing it.

I was cross he missed out old man willow, and only slightly placated that he turned up in TTT. However I was very cross about the barrow wight - and how they got all their swords and so on. But I'm warming a bit to Bombadil over the years (my daughter has just read that part and she told me to give him another go so I might)

The person I really really wanted to have in the film is Glorfindel. But I can't think who could have plaid him at the time. (Now I'd want Tom Hiddleston but that is because I lurve him)

Simon Callow... I could definitely see that smiley - biggrin Is it my imagination or has the Barrow Wight turned up in a different version... although what version it might be I can't really think. I have a memory of a the disembodied arm, crawling, the hand pulling it along the ground smiley - yikes

Or maybe that was something else entirely. Probably an old Hammer film smiley - laugh

I annoyed too that they left out the chapter leading up to the Old Forest - meeting (and having supper with) Farmer Maggot, and the house at Crickhollow. I suppose one good things about that is that my images of it are still as they've always been - the film hasn't modified those.

By the way, have we ever talked about Bored of the Rings? Every time I read the Old Forest chapter I can't help thinking of Tim Benzedrine and his wife Hashberry smiley - rofl
