Chronicles of Narnia
Jemstone Posted Apr 28, 2006
Hello!
Stayed in bed for an extra hour this morning just to finish Chocolat because I was enjoying it so much and very near the end. I was surprised that Roux ended up with Josephine though, but LOVED all the characters. Armande is just like I want to be when I'm old, and Vianne is just like I would love to be now! It really was beautifully written and I'm going to look out for more Joanne Harris books - have you read any more of hers? I watched the movie this afternoon and I agree with you - the saving grace was Johnny Depp. I didn't understand why they changed Pantoufle from a rabbit into a kangaroo for one thing. Judi Dench was the perfect Armande, but much of the story was lost in the film - I mean where the hell did the magic go (apart from the chocolate beans that made the couple feel randy)? Yes the film was disappointing but I'm so glad I read the book I thought it was wonderful! Now I need to rummage in the other books that I bought from the 2nd hand shop and decide what to read next. How is the Bernard Cornwell series coming? And... how was the German meet? Did many people turn up for the fun?

Oh yes, it is very disappointing that all the magic vanished out of the book, and the angsty parts (especially the end)
In fact Chocolat is a book I'd read again. And I think it was her first novel (I believe she was a French teacher and didn't stop teaching for quite a while after the novel came out)
I'm slowly (because I don't have much time to read ) getting through the first of the Cornwell books, Rebel. Written in his typical style, which I like, with an attention to peripheral detail which I really like.
Next I really have to read some of the books I got for Christmas
What about you? reading anything intereestng now?
As for the German meet, it was a lot of fun even though there were only a few of us. B'Elana lives in Frankfurt and was a great host. Trillian's Child came along with her husband for the first afternoon/evening, Reddyfreddy and Mazin' Mad Fiddler came over from England. And there was me. If you want to read about it...

Hi Sho!
Sorry it's taken so long for a reply, I've been trying to keep up with all the conversations on the Doctor Who forum since the new series started!
I read your German Meet report - sounds like you had fun! I love Apfelwein! I've not had it for a long time but reading about you guys drinking it brought back some memories!
I don't know if you caught my quick post on the book forum, but I've just started reading the Da Vinci Code again to prepare for the movie release in a couple of weeks. I enjoyed the book in it's own right - I think it had some very interesting ideas and I'm keen to know how it will come across in the film. Did you read the book? I know it's a bit of a marmite book - you either love it or hate it. I'm interested to know what you thought about it (if you've read it) especially as it was full of religion!
I'll be waving at you from the plane again tomorrow morning as I'll be going to Stuttgart yet again. Hope you and the family are well, and I'll talk to you soon!
Jem
