On any clear night, you should be able to see a satellite within about five minutes.

or it could have been the space station.
www.spaceflight.nasa.gov has a feature called 'skywatch' where you type in where you are and it shows what times and what few minutes you may be able to see it.
if you can see mars, you can cetrainly see the ISS at select times.
it's brighter than any comet or meteor, and the longest i've seen it was 3-plus minutes.
