To be honest I dont look on Pearl Harbor as an attrocity, or horrific. Its one of those things that only outsiders see I guess, but in my opinion Pearl Harbor was merely a highly sucessful tactic, nothing more.

When you say it goes against the Japanesse ideals it does and it doesnt. In terms of the Hagakure it does completely, that was the Samurai ideal, and the Samurai had been thoughrily trampled upon with the arrival of repeating weapons in Japan. Without the Samurai ideals as driving forces, it was no holes bared. Some areas of Japan do still relate to the same ideals of honor but simply not to the same extent anymore (The last symbolism of this is probably the Kamikaze pilots, who were utterly willing to die for there lord and his honor - the same as samurai).

Even if it was a dishonorable way of fighting, with the Japanesse attacking in secret, surely the Hiroshima bomb et al were more horrific? The Hagakure has a story about letting nothing stand in your way. However Samurai arent stupid either. If they were following the Hagakure they were taking a misguided veiw - but had no one to correct them, and so beleived there actions honorable.

By bombing Hiroshima rather then taking the Japanesse forces head on (samurai warfare) they were doing exactly the same.

your views are different from mine
it is good to die for one"s nation and fight for it and its freedom
but to kill others for nothing is worrying me

Then the same could be said of Iraq.
How many times have you heard on the news 'Iraqi insurgants killed'? everyday really. There fighting for there country.

Palestinians were doing the same till arafat died.

My point is that the Japanesse would have fought to a man woman and child to protect there country, the Americans might of but its doubtful. The Americans robbed them of there dignity by bombing millions of people into oblivion with atomics.
Crude, effective, more dishonourable.

These replies were expectable of mixed feelings. In any war there are 2 sides and each claims to be right.
I think in any war of the human history there are no winners; just the fight comes to an end for whatever reason right or wrong.

There is only one point to take into consideration: who is starting the fight?
As a child—I remember—I never ever started a fight with my brother.

This was always my defense: what ever I did, it was because my brother as older, bigger and stronger started a fight what for I never remember. But I as a younger, smaller little girl always tried to get out of the shorter end naturally with different technique.

Now we are very caring, loving brother and sister. With good sense of humor.

Unfortunately when things are serious, and weapons come into consideration, than is a war, with any form of destruction—till the end when peace comes again.

Only the question remains: who is right or wrong as every side has their own argument till they become loving brother and sister.smiley - rose

VERY moving Post.
i will not debate the political and sociological issues on Pearl Harbor or the use of the Bomb to both begin and end the conflict, save to note that it took catastrophic consequences in BOTH events.

Thank you to several a/k/a random writing with "cool head". Because that is the only way to come to the most objective "opinion" an any difficult issues regarding any wars at any time.

I write only and mostly about those subjects in h2g2 what involves my own experience. I do not write EDITED GUIDE ENTRIES! smiley - eureka

The guide lines interfere with my "creative" THINKING. And I like the freshness and wit of the personal experience with interpretation, vs. sweaty, boring, repetitious factual information put together from better source of informations. ( No need to follow search engines when they are there.) Though I am not stopping you to write "brilliant" Guide Entries by the RULES!

What I saw and what I felt in Pearl Harbor that is what I wrote about.
Regarding the A bomb ( if it was a backlesh or not) I don't know.Certainly was brutal but any action is brutal in every war action.

Yet it ended the war INSTANTLY. Though the loss was enormous, but draging a war with slow action parit reaction calls for more loss in the long run. One has to take that into consideration.
The sooner the better for the sake of PEACE. Stop the fighting!

This is my reply to Several a/k/a random's kind words.

thanks blue bird. i understand completely the computer issues. (all too well, in fact, if you ask Shazz on the weekly Post.)
and you're right in conveying the 'feeling' as a major part of the 'point' of writing, from my perspective. your piece FELT like it was visiting the memorial, and i'll leave all the socio/ political after-the-fact words for others.
millions died too early in their lives.
and i'll repeat--good story. hope the rest of your trip to hawaii had some great moments, too.

Certainly was a very good trip, mostly educational. As I learned about Hawaii so many wonderful things, I kept returning in the following years.
One of an adventures journey to the Big Island is written and published in the POST in Hawaii archive.
Thanks for your comment which is refreshingly clear. Blue Bird smiley - biggrin

some folks would tell you i'm much less than 'clear' (hush, Shazz !) but thanks.
i found a disappointing article in one of the sunday newspapers from the Associated Press that the Arizona Memorial is cracking and sinking. it was designed for yearly crowds of 750,000 when it was built in 1980, but they're getting more than twice that.
this is the place where they start the ferry rides, and some folks are looking into raising $34 mil in the next five years, before it sinks. apparently, they built it on landfill dredgings from the harbor and expected it to settle, but all the people visiting are making it settle a little more than the 18 inches in the original design----like a foot more.
