Not much to be added to this one either, again, short but concise.
Comments welcome.
Hope I've re-written it enough anyway.

I can try to look it up, ST - do you know where you saw it (BBC News, or which paper?) and about how long ago? Was it in the UK?

BBC Search isn't the easiest tool to configure, and I could only find these, which may not include the one you saw, ST.

Heavy horse breeds under threat

Heavy horses make light of task

History - straight from the horse's mouth!

Just had a thought - This is the sort of entry which will attract our younger readers. Did you want to add a link for them? eg:

CBBC: Shire horse 'under threat in UK'

>>The Suffolk Punch heavy horse was generally only to be seen in Eastern counties where it worked on the land and only became known throughout the UK when farms became mechanised and the use of heavy horses declined.<<

What happened then?

>>One of the reasons is that at the height of the horses popularity East Anglia was a distant and remote part of the UK,<<

Awkward phrase, methinks.

Interesting, sad. It would be nice to get a photo with this entry.

I'm having one of my thick head days today, not sure what's being asked or queried in post 10. The decline is explained, or I thought it was? Not sure about the awkward phrase either, could you elucidate somewhat please? smiley - ta

ST, a suggestion or two re. Leo's Post #10. I struggled too, btw.

>>The Suffolk Punch heavy horse was generally only to be seen in Eastern counties where it worked on the land and only became known throughout the UK when farms became mechanised and the use of heavy horses declined.<<

<>

Maybe Leo was asking how/why the Suffolk Punch only became known throughout the UK after mechanisation? For example were the horses dispersed around the country, pensioned off etc?

I have a habit of writing long sentences too, but I think that first paragraph would read more easily as:

'The Suffolk Punch heavy horse was generally only to be seen in Eastern counties where it worked on the land. It only became known throughout the UK when farms became mechanised and the use of heavy horses declined.'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Awkward phrase:
<< One of the reasons is that at the height of the horses popularity East Anglia was a distant and remote part of the UK,>>
Might this be better?
'One reason is that at the height of the horse's popularity East Anglia was a remote part of the UK, almost totally isolated, with little in the way of road or rail networks.'
ST, if that confuses you still further I apologise smiley - smiley I shall wait to see if someone does better. smiley - smiley
Websailor - you got my idea, but your suggested sentence for the first one still doesn't answer.
The answer to my question - why did the horse become well known after mechanisation - is answered later in the entry - they were just becoming known when mechanisation made them obsolete. (At least, that's what I think.) It wasn't mechanisation that made them known.
In which case, maybe the reference to becoming known after mechanisation should just be taken out of the sentence in question.
smiley - ok
Post 14
No it wasn't mechanisation that made them known, but it was mechanisation which put them 'out to grass'. I suspect they became more universally known as owners looked further afield for new homes and new uses for these splendid animals.
When ST comes back from what will hopefully be a restful weekend I am sure he will take your point.
