I prefer square root of 10000 approximation day myself.

It all started with pi aproximation day. A common approximation to pi is 22/7, so the twentysecond of july was adopted as it. The square root of 100 is 10, or 10/1, the tenth of January.

Bah - I had misread it. The square root of 1000 is 31.6, so the closest they could get was the 31st.
