Isn't there some debate about whether it was named after him, Richard Amerike, or the Amerrique region of Nicaragua? Don't know how likely these other theories are, or whether they're even worth a mention though.

As stated in the article it was so named in the mid 1500s
by mapmakers.
Detail maps of places like Nicaragua came much later.
However, that might make an intersting footnote if you can provide a reference to where it was contested.

I heard it somewhere I can't remember, then I found it on Wiki, so that's why I said I don't know how likely it is to be true. So no references, sorry.

Wiki used a BBC source which I have included in a footnote.

Hi Shagbark A couple of h2g2 House Style pointers for you:
We should use the h2g2 standard format for all dates, so March 9th, 1454 should be written as 9 March, 1454. This is almost what you have at the bottom of the entry with 22 February, 1512, except you need a space between the comma and the year.
The text part of your link to Martin Waldseemmuller has an extra letter 'm' in it and the letter 'u' should have an umlaut (the two dots above the letter). However these special characters have to be written in a special way. Change the Martin Waldseemmuller to Martin Waldseemüller (exactly as written here).

Hi Shagbark
This has the potential to go all the way. However, there are a number of spelling mistakes and other things that could be addressed first. Here's my list for changes. I hope you don't mind.
Right first things first lure the reader into reading your Entry by using an introduction before the header. Sum up what the person means to you and say when they lived.
You have forgotten a comma after the year 1454 and 1512
Do you mean 'his childhood' rather than 'a childhood' or perhaps even leave the word 'a' out.
What else did he dream of doing?
Traveled is spelt travelled
Traveling is spelt travelling
Fourties is spelt forties
Brazillian should be spelt Brazilian
Use a capital letter for Spain
It may be obvious but perhaps you could define the word 'navigator'.
Always use a capital letter to begin a sentence so <> is incorrect it should start <>
Do you mean Southern Georgia Islands....I think you should write the 'S' word in full
I'm not sure about you guessing what he read
The 'g' in greek should be capitalised
Perhaps you should say literature instead of writings
Ptolomy is spelt Ptolemy
Why is Astronomy capitalised but geography not
Encyclopedia is spelt Encyclopaedia
I don't understand <>
Carribean should be spelt Caribbean
celestrial should be spelt celestial
mathmatics should be spelt mathematics
What others said 'terra incognito' and do you know the literal translation?
Afer should be spelt after
Do you know why they didn't have children?
What did his wife say about him if anything?
Do you know where exactly he was buried in Seville, Spain?
I think you could add more links
Don't give up this is on it's way to being a great Entry.

Was watching QI and they said America is unlikely to have been named after Amerigo Vespucci as they never named places after people's first names unless they were monarchs. If it was named after him it should be Vespuccia. Again, no idea if this is true or not, but Stephen Fry said it!

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

apparently it is a painful process- the sub editor chosen refused it.
note to whoever is chosen to replace Gnomon-
I am happy with the article without any reference to the Queen of Spain- however it wouldn't hurt my feelings if she was mentioned.
Congratulations - Your Entry has been Picked for the Edited Guide!
